PaEel's guest speaker, Dr. Alison Feit, director of the Jewish Center for Trauma and Recovery, spoke of the terrible conditions and consequences that victims of sexual abuse face and the need for change in the Jewish community to combat sexual exploitation. Atzum serves as an example of an organization that fights for basic human rights and the dignity of women facing brutal injustices, and PaEel urges you to support this respectable organization.
September 19, 2011 - Opening Event in Jerusalem to Support the Fight Against Hunger
Jerusalem, Israel
Just a week before the holiday of Rosh Hashana, when the Jewish community in Israel was preparing for the Jewish new year, young professional Jews, who moved to Israel from the United States and other English speaking countries, attended PaEel's opening event in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Katamon. They gathered in what many now know as the "magical garden apartment" of Katamon to hear Dalia Hillman speak about the Ichlu Reim Soup Kitchen that she manages in Jerusalem, entirely on volunteer basis, and what Ichlu Reim does to fight hunger in Israel.
Following Ms. Hillman's talk on effective ways to give back to the community through working with the Soup Kitchen, attendees heard from Torah educators Deena Garber and Dr. Jennie Rosenfeld, who spoke on additional aspects that the Jewish community focuses on pre-Rosh Hashana, namely, relationships and the importance of love, self-reflection, and giving to one another. The event was a success, motivating many to strengthen their relationships and to give of their time and services to the community through volunteer work at Ichlu Reim and other charitable organizations in Israel!
July 7, 2011 - Supporting Jews Indigenous to Middle East & North Africa
New York, NY
Along with co-sponsors MASA Israel and Volunteers for Israel (VFI), PaEel welcomed Middle East Specialist, Jospeh Braude, of Iraqi, Jewish origin, to read selections of his recently published book, "The Honored Dead," about Joseph's experience in Morocco while he was embedded with the police in Casablanca. As he spoke about a criminal homicide investigation he encountered there, he also interspersed the discussion with information on the Jewish community of Morocco and his own personal encounters as a Jew in a predominantly Arab environment.
Donations collected at the event were forwarded to JIMENA, an organization that preserves the culture of Jews Indigenous to the Middle East and North Africa, Jews who had been displaced from their countries of origin, becoming refugees forced to leave their homes solely because of their Jewish identity. JIMENA recently commenced an Oral history project to document the stories of these Mizrahi and Sephardi Jews who fled 10 North African and Middle Eastern countries to escape discrimination and persecution in the 20th Century. The valuable contributions we collected at the event went towards helping to fund this particular JIMENA project.
June 12, 2011 - Special Evening to Support Israeli Youth in Distress
New York, NY
Building Jewish families was the theme of the evening, which was devoted to supporting Israeli youth in distress. Troubled youth from abusive and neglected Israeli homes have faced a number of challenges in Israel. The Israeli non-profit organization, ELEM, created centers throughout the country, staffed with trained mentors and counselors, to lend assistance to these youngsters. At PaEel's event, ELEM Young Leadership Co-chairperson Yuval Sheer spoke of the importance of these centers and the relief they often provide to many of the troubled youth in Israel.
Following the talk about ELEM and Israeli youth, the evening continued on, focusing on the theme of building Jewish families by presenting a panel discussion on relationships and dating, directed towards the young Jewish singles community in New York City, who themselves, are seeking to build Jewish families with the right partners. Psychologist Daniel Hoffman, Mental Health Counselor Liz Wallenstein, Dating Coach Samantha Karlin, as well the recently married Physician, Sherrie Neustein Orzel, all joined the panel, moderated by TV and Film Producer, Miki Heino of Miki's Single Files. Each one shared valuable insights on relationships and dating including the topics of compatibility, effective communication, attractive qualities, and dating burn-out.
A meaningful and fun evening was certainly spent by all - first, learning about the instrumental work of ELEM in Israel, and second, hearing tips on how to improve the dating and relationship experience that eventually leads to marriage, to building a Jewish family!
